The summer of 2024 has become a haven for European football enthusiasts, with two major tournaments captivating fans globally: EURO 2024 and Copa America 2024. These tournaments are not just about the thrill of the game; they also bring to light some important societal issues, such as the increase in domestic violence during major sporting events.

The dark side of major tournaments
While these tournaments bring joy to millions, they also coincide with an increase in domestic violence incidents. Studies have shown a disturbing trend where domestic violence reports spike during major sporting events. Research from Lancaster University found a 26% increase in domestic violence incidents when the England team played, with a 38% rise when the team lost. These statistics highlight the need for increased awareness and support during such periods.

A call for awareness and action
As fans around the world immerse themselves in the excitement of EURO 2024 and Copa America 2024, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the societal impacts that come with these events. Support services and community initiatives must be proactive in offering help and resources to those in need. Enjoy the beautiful game, but remember to be vigilant and supportive of efforts to combat domestic violence.
